PROBLEM SOLVING
Initial Ideas
When I first read the brief for this unit, I was very worried as I had no idea how I was going to approach the task from home. I didn't have anyone to use as a subject in the video and I desperately wanted to avoid having to appear in it myself. Another thing that worried me was that the aim of the brief - to make the audience smile - was something that I wasn't entirely confident I would be able to do as the things that I find funny don't often appeal to most others. The format of the project was also something that I wasn't entirely confident about because of how my group's music video turned out last year. However, knowing that I would be doing this individually gave me confidence as i knew that I would have complete freedom with what direction I took when considering ideas.
Whilst desperately trying to think of ideas, I briefly thought about doing an animation. However, I didn't consider it very seriously as I had very little experience in creating animations and would also have to take into account the short time frame given to make it and the obvious limitations regarding software and equipment as I would be making it from home. Despite this, I started looking at videos on YouTube that detailed the process of making stop-motion animations on an iPad as I thought this would likely be the style I chose if I did an animation.
After watching this video, I searched on the Apple AppStore to try and find the mentioned app - Stop Motion Studio. However, whilst searching, another app called FlipaClip caught my eye and I downloaded it out of curiosity. When I tried using it, I realised that the layout was very simple and didn't require any significant getting used to and simply allowed you to draw each frame and then view it back together as you went along. This inspired me to give it a go and when I realised that I could make a video fairly easily, I finally decided that I would be doing an animation for this project but not stop-motion as I came to realise that it would have taken far too long.
Up to this point, I had avoided thinking of ideas to a certain extent as I wanted to be certain that I would be able to make an animation beforehand. Now that I had decided, I began brainstorming ideas that were suitable to my limited ability and lacking experience with animations. I also had to take into account the primary goal of the brief which was to make the audience smile and the fact that I would likely have to shape my idea around whichever song I chose to include. I began listing ideas in my notebook and making mind maps. I also started sketching images on paper in the hopes that it would bring me inspiration.
I spent the majority of my time trying to think of ideas whilst sat at my desk playing music and although this was usually just for relaxation, it helped me very much in this situation as the song 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' by The Beatles came on and hearing the fantastical lyrics made me think about the complete freedom they must have mad whilst writing it. Given the extremely limited time frame, we were given to do this project and the very difficult circumstances of creating it from home, this was something that I very much wanted but had to find a way of justifying.
This is why, with influence from The Beatles obvious allusions to hallucinogenic drugs, I decided to follow this route. I knew, from this point onwards, that I had to be very careful not to, in any way, advocate or promote the use of this drug or any drugs. However, I knew that this subject would allow me to be darkly humorous instead of trying too hard to be funny which would certainly have failed miserably. Despite this, I knew that I still had to appeal to the target audience and the majority instead of those with a similar sense of humour and so I couldn't be too restrictive with my approach.
Final Idea
The idea that I finally decided upon crating was a fairly short animation that depicted the chaotic and surreal hallucinations experienced by somebody under the influence of a psychoactive hallucinogen with symbolic, metaphorical, and slightly philosophical allusions.
Although I had intentionally taken this path in order to allow me complete freedom with what images I included in the animation, I still wanted to avoid being pretentious and ensure that it didn't spiral into complete nonsense. Despite this, I felt confident that I could rely on my messed-up brain and my newly-found lockdown insanity to think of and create images that were both symbolic and allusive enough to elicit the intended emotional response in the audience.
Something that I made sure to consider before I began with this animation was how to deal with this subject given how controversial and sensitive it can be. I also wanted to avoid pushing across any specific personal views or opinions on the subject as I wanted the video to appeal to most people and not just those that shared my opinion. A film that helped me with how I planned to tackle the topic was 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.' Although, this is perhaps a strange film to list as influence, the way that events take place and the complete absurdity with how they are handled was something that I wanted to replicate.
Choosing a Song
Once I decided that I was going to do an animation, I was then tasked with finding which song to use for the video. At this point, there were a few factors that I knew I had to consider before settling on a song. These were:
Duration
As I knew that I didn't have very long to complete it, the duration of the song was very important as it would likely dictate how long the animation had to be. Because of this, I made sure to search only for songs that didn't extend over the minute mark as when working it out, I realised that a minute long song at 10fps (which is what I was going to choose) would result in me having to draw up to 600 individual frames for my animation.
Tone
Considering the brief and the intended goal of this project - to make people smile, the tone of the song was obviously a very important element. I knew that the song choice was just as vital as the visuals when it came to eliciting a positive emotional response from the audience and that the wrong song choice could drastically diminish the success of the final result.
Lyrics
Another thing that I took into account during my search for which song to use was its lyrical content. The last thing I wanted, given the time frame I had to complete this, was a song that had vocals. The reason I didn't want a song with vocals was that I didn't want to be forced to correlate the visuals with the lyrics as I wasn't at all experienced with animation and may have struggled if expected to draw something specific simply because it was referred to in the lyrics. I also didn't want this to negatively impact the idea that I had in my head as I would probably have made changes to the idea that I had which may have impacted the final product negatively.
My Song Choice
The song that I decided to use for my music video was 'Cigolettes Da La Banda Delle Libellule.' The song is taken from part of a Nino Rota soundtrack to the 1963 Italian film 8 1/2 directed by Federico Fellini. I first heard the song when watching the film a while back and, whilst searching for a song to use, I began thinking of soundtracks to films that I love in the hopes that I would be able to find a song that was upbeat enough to make me smile. The scene that the song is used in is also a very upbeat scene.
This song was really the first and the only song that I considered using as I thought of it pretty instantly and immediately decided that it was what I wanted to use in my music video. The reason I decided so quickly was that it was perfect considering the criteria that I mentioned.
The song only lasts roughly 40 seconds which is exactly what I wanted as anything shorter may have been too short and anything longer would have taken far too long to make. As the song was only about 40 seconds this meant that I would likely have to draw up to 400 frames which, although sounded dreadful at the time, was still 200 frames less than if I had chosen a minute-long song.
The song also has no lyrics which is what I wanted so that I didn't have to correlate the visuals with them in any way. The song is also very upbeat and always made me smile which was probably the most important factor when selecting the song.
